Let’s Lose Allergies

The cause of your sniffs and sneezes isn’t always related to microscopic body invaders. Advanced Integrative Medicine in Plainfield helps many people who suffer from allergies, which can masquerade as a cold or flu but require quite different treatments. So, how can you know what you have? Below is the low-down on four of the most common allergies so you can do battle properly.

Sources: Flowers, shrubs and other plants

Symptoms: Sneezing, itchy eyes, watery eyes, runny nose and congestion

Common treatments: People who are allergic to pollen can often tell what season it is outside just by sniffing—and sneezing. Dr. Kalpesh Patel typically prescribes antihistamines, decongestants and other drugs that reduce swelling and thin mucus to make breathing easier. The doctor in Plainfield also recommends that patients limit their time outdoors, especially on windy days.

Animal dander

Sources: Most dogs and cats

Symptoms: Sneezing, itchy eyes, water eyes, runny nose and congestion

Common treatments: Similar to pollen allergy sufferers, those who are allergic to pet dander also experience respiratory distress. Therefore, the same treatments apply. It might also be necessary to stay away from dogs and cats, or if that is not possible, to regularly wash furniture, rugs and other areas where animal hair gathers.

Sources: Peanuts, peanut butter, cookies and other products made with peanuts

Symptoms: Swelling of the face, hives, asthma, diarrhea, vomiting and restriction of the airway.

Common treatments: The reactions of those who have a peanut allergy range from mild to deadly, so the doctor in Plainfield urges that those who suspect they could have such an allergy visit his office for a full evaluation. Depending upon the severity of the allergy, Dr. Patel might recommend refraining from peanuts and all peanut products. When exposed, taking antihistamines or steroids can reduce facial swelling. In life-threatening cases, an epinephrine injection might be necessary to reverse the allergic reaction.

Sources: Drugs used to treat a range of infections, including sinus infections and strep throat

Symptoms: Skin rash, hives, itchy eyes, congestion, lung restriction and swelling in the mouth and throat.

Common treatments: Upon meeting new patients, the internal medicine doctor in Plainfield asks whether they are allergic to any medicines, and “Penicillin” is a common answer. The severity of the allergic reaction can vary, and so can treatments. Our doctor in Plainfield typically recommends avoiding penicillin altogether, but sometimes exposure cannot be avoided. Swelling is treated with antihistamines or steroids, and drugs called “bronchodilators” can treat airway and lung restriction. During severe reactions, an epinephrine injection might be necessary.

Before starting any treatment plan, call Advanced Integrative Medicine in Plainfield for a full allergy test and personalized treatment regimen.

Sedation Dentistry in Joliet

Sedation dentistry is designed for patients that experience pain or anxiety during dental procedures. The levels of sedation vary depending on the type of procedure being done and how the patient wishes to feel during the procedure. Sedation can be given to eliminate anxiety, nervousness, pain, and discomfort. Dr. James Babiuk of the Centre for Oral Surgery in Joliet shares options for sedation dentistry in Joliet.

The first level of sedation dentistry is inhaled minimal sedation. Minimal sedation is inhaled through a mask. Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas” is administered through a facial mask with oxygen to help the patient relax. The amount of gas administered can be easily controlled before and during the procedure.

The next level of sedation dentistry is known as minimal sedation. At this level of sedation, the patient will take a pill about an hour before their procedure. During the procedure, the patient may be drowsy but they will still be awake. The patient will remember little to none of their procedure with minimal sedation.

The next level of sedation dentistry is the most common, it is known as IV moderate sedation. This level of sedation works very quickly because it is administered into the bloodstream during treatment.  This method makes it is easy to adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure. With IV moderate sedation, patients do not feel any pain or discomfort and do not recall any of the procedure. Dr. Babiuk can perform surgery for longer with this method of sedation because the patient is still conscious. If a patient is unconscious, it makes it more difficult to perform surgery for a longer period of time.

General anesthesia is the next level of sedation after IV sedation. These medications will put the patient in a state of deep sleep; the patient will be almost if not completely unconscious. Unlike other levels of sedation, this level is the hardest to control because the patient cannot be woken up immediately after it is administered. The general anesthesia either needs to wear off or a medication needs to be administered to reverse the effects of the anesthesia.

Sedation dentistry up to IV moderate sedation is the most common when completing dental procedures. They are easy to control and monitor during the procedure. They allow for Dr. Babiuk to work for the longest periods of time while controlling the sedation. At the same time, it benefits the patient because the patient will not feel anxiousness, nervousness, pain, or discomfort during the surgery. Many patients do not want to remember their dental procedures, and this is simple to accomplish with IV sedation dentistry.

Plainfield Doctor Shares Five Tips for Successful Diabetes Management

Dr. Kalpesh Patel, doctor in Plainfield, explains how patients can simplify their diabetes management plan.

Controlling diabetes may require some lifestyle adjustments, but remembering this key point can simplify any diabetes management plan: if you can control your blood glucose levels, you can control your diabetes. The following five tips by Dr. Kalpesh Patel, Plainfield doctor, are not only designed to help you keep your blood sugar levels in check, but also to improve your overall wellbeing.

1) Monitor your blood glucose levels.
Self-monitoring your blood glucose (sugar) levels is crucial to understanding your diabetes. It is important to know what your blood glucose levels are before a meal, after a meal, and after fasting. This will give you a better understanding of how you need to manage your diabetes.

An electronic meter is extremely accurate in reading blood glucose levels. Dr. Patel will help you decide how often you should monitor and what type of electronic meter would work best for you. It may be necessary for you to test once or several times a day depending on your specific needs. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), blood glucose should be between 70 and 130 mg/dl before a meal and less than 180 mg/dl after a meal.

2) Maintain a healthy diet.
•   Eat on a schedule. Your blood glucose levels will stabilize if you eat at the same times every day. Your body will get used to the set schedule and maintain a more stable blood glucose level.
•   Eat a balanced diet. A diet rich in vegetables, fruit, lean meats, whole grains, and low-fat dairy can offer the most stability in your blood glucose levels. These foods nourish our bodies and give us a steady amount of energy. They will also prevent blood sugar spikes and drops. Additionally, a balanced diet will help you maintain a healthy weight, which is critical in managing your diabetes. According to the ADA, “A healthy meal plan for people with diabetes is generally the same as a healthy diet for anyone – low in fat (especially saturated and trans fat), moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on whole grain foods, vegetables and fruit.”

3) Exercise regularly.
Your body uses glucose for energy during periods of physical activity. Daily exercise will improve the way your body reacts to insulin. In combination with a balanced diet, daily exercise can help keep your blood glucose levels down by using excess energy.

4) Maintain low blood pressure and cholesterol.
A healthy diet and daily exercise will contribute to healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Diabetics have an increased risk of developing high blood pressure that can lead to further complications such as heart attack, stroke, or other diseases.

•   Healthy blood pressure. The ADA recommends that blood pressure be under 130/80 mm Hg. Treatment and lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and exercise, can both contribute to healthy blood pressure.
•   Healthy cholesterol. A healthy diet and daily exercise can improve your cholesterol. The ADA recommends LDL, or “lousy” cholesterol, be under 100 mg/dl. HDL, healthy cholesterol, should be over 40 mg/dl for men and over 50 mg/dl for women. Cholesterol levels may be too high or too low if blood glucose levels are off, so if you keep your blood glucose levels under control, you have a better chance of keeping your cholesterol under control as well.

5) Maintain good oral hygiene.
Gum disease is a common problem among those with diabetes. High blood glucose levels increase the risk of developing dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Keeping blood glucose levels down will decrease these risks. For optimal oral hygiene, make sure to:

•   Brush teeth at least twice a day
•   Floss at least once a day
•   Schedule regular dental exams (every six months)

Being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean that you cannot be healthy. Diabetes can be managed by monitoring your blood glucose levels, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol, and maintaining good oral hygiene. Gingivitis… Gum Disease… Periodontal Disease…

In the most basic terms, gum disease is the growth of bacteria in your mouth. The disease eventually progresses to more advanced stages, attacking the gum tissue that provides stability to your teeth and attaches your teeth to your gums.

As bacteria spreads in your mouth, it creates a substance called “plaque” on the teeth. If plaque is not removed, it builds up and hardens into tartar, a firmer matter. This is very difficult to get off your teeth, as it is attached like glue, becoming much harder to scrape off. This stage is known as gingivitis.

During the initial stages of gingivitis, you will begin to notice your gums turning red, and  you’ll see that you are bleeding when you brush your teeth. If treated quickly at this point, you will be able to save your teeth.

You can take preventative measures early on with a dedicated oral hygiene program, which includes routine professional cleaning appointments with your dentist. You should also make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally after all your meals. You should also floss regularly. With a consistent oral program, you can reduce plaque and prevent gingivitis.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Gums are pink and healthy-looking
  • No bleeding
  • Gum line is tight around the teeth; no pockets

  • Gums are inflamed, tender and red
  • Bad breath and bad taste
  • Gums bleed when brushed or probed gently

  • Bad breath and bad taste
  • Slight bone loss
  • More pronounced bleeding, puffiness and inflammation
  • Gums start to pull away from the teeth
  • Pockets of 4 millimeters form between teeth and gums

Advanced Periodontitis

  • Chronic bad breath and bad taste
  • Tooth roots become exposed; sensitive to hot and cold
  • Teeth may become mobile or loose
  • Pockets over 6 millimeters deep between teeth and gums
  • Severe angular and horizontal bone loss on X-ray

Gum Disease May Affect Your General Health

Tooth infections and gum inflammations caused by periodontal disease may be associated with cognitive decline and dementia.

Respiratory Infections

The buildup of dental plaque serves as a breeding ground for bacteria that may reach the lungs through inhalation. Additionally, inhaling oral bacteria can lead to pneumonia.

Severe Osteopenia

Gum disease and tooth loss have shown to be linked with a reduction in bone mass (osteopenia).
Post-menopausal women are especially at risk for tooth loss-related severe osteopenia.

Pregnancy Complications

The heightened levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy cause the gums to react differently to plaque bacteria. This reaction causes bleeding, swelling, redness or soreness in the gum tissue—signs of gingivitis. 60-70% of women will develop gingivitis during their pregnancy. This is called pregnancy gingivitis.

Adults who suffer from periodontitis may have an increased risk of stroke.

Oral Cancer

Chronic periodontitis may lead to bone loss, thus increasing the risk of oral cancer.

Heart Disease

Periodontitis is associated with several diseases related to the cardiovascular system. Oral bacteria may cause problems with clotting in the cardiovascular system. Periodonditis also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and fatal heart attacks.

Uncontrolled Diabetes

People who suffer from type 2 diabetes are three times more likely to develop periodontal disease than are nondiabetics. This is because diabetes can alter the environment of the healthy mouth, contributing to bacterial growth. If diabetes is combined with smoking, the chance of tooth loss increases by 20 times.

Bolingbrook Dentist Shares Five Ways to Improve Oral Health

Does seeing your smile make you sullen? Have you endured dental checkups that weren’t up to your standards? Lily Cache Dental in Bolingbrook believes that every patient has the potential of a gorgeous smile just underneath the surface, and we want to help you let it shine.

These five simple steps will have you smiling wide once again:

  1. Regular brushing: Your mother’s loving reminders as a child were true. Your toothbrush is one of the most important weapons you have against tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing removes leftover food particles that can lead to plaque buildup and bad breath. And don’t just brush in the mornings and at bedtime.  Scrubbing those pearly whites after lunch and after snacks keeps your mouth even cleaner. Be sure to use a soft-bristled brush with a head that is small enough to reach the back molars.
  2. Brush your tongue: Your tongue needs a scrubbing, too! It’s spongy and wet and is a playground for bacteria. Using a scraping tool after every tooth brushing, or simply brushing with a toothbrush, removes disease-causing germs from the tongue’s nooks and crannies. Plus, with those microscopic bad guys gone, your mouth will also smell fresher.
  3. Rinse: In addition to brushing and scraping, our dentists in Flossmoor recommend adding rinsing to your routine. Mouthwash can flow between tight spaces that floss and bristles can’t reach to remove even more debris—all while killing germs. Be sure, though, to choose a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol. Alcohol can dry the mouth and gum tissues, disabling the natural ability of saliva to fight bacteria.
  4. Eat well: You might give your dog a bone to help keep her teeth clean. Well, the same principle goes for us humans. Foods that rub against the teeth while eating them are actually better for your oral health. Popcorn is an excellent choice, as are apples, which naturally kill germs and freshen breath.
  5. Stay away from dark foods: If you want to keep your teeth white or help them whiten, refrain from drinking foods that will stain. A good rule of thumb is that if it’s dark going in, it’ll darken your teeth. This rule includes red wine, coffee, tea and soda. If you just can’t stay away, brush your teeth immediately after consuming dark foods and drinks.
